Age is only a number and older Hertsmere residents have the opportunity to prove the saying correct by participating in a range of physical activities from this month.

Hertsmere Borough Council is supporting Hertfordshire County Council’s ‘It’s Never Too Late To Be Active’ campaign, which runs between 23 April and 15 July to encourage the older generation to take up physical activity and is part of the Hertfordshire Year of Physical Activity.

The campaign aims to boost the number of people in the over 55 age range participating in exercise after figures revealed that 41.7 per cent of the 55-64 age group do less than the recommended 150 minutes exercise a week.

The council would like to offer anyone the opportunity to trial yoga for free on Thursday 3 May, 6.30-7.30pm at Allum Hall, Allum Lane, Elstree, WD6 3PJ.  There is also the opportunity to try any We Move, She Moves session (that you have not previously attended) for free.  Visit the website, http://wemoveshemoves.me.uk/events/list/, have a look what is on in May and pick a session you would like to try then email community.services@hertsmere.gov.uk letting us know which session and what date (in May 2018) and we will email you the voucher. Unfortunately Learn to Run is excluded from this as it is a course. Councillor Caroline Clapper, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Health, said: “Participating in regular exercise is so important for all age groups, because it helps to reduce the risk of chronic disease and injury and can even improve your mood.

“As the campaign’s title states, it’s never too late to be active, so why not take advantage of this opportunity to take up a new sporting challenge, which will improve your health, by taking part in some of the activities.”

The Hertfordshire Year of Physical Activity 2018 is aimed at encouraging residents to adopt a more active lifestyle.
